August 1 is recognized as Emancipation Day, the day when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 became law across the British Empire, including Canada on August 1, 1834. On this day, the practice of slavery officially ended for millions of African people and their descendants in Canada and around the world.
African-Canadian communities have commemorated Emancipation Day since the 1800s, most notably Black communities in the towns of Windsor, Owen Sound, Amherstburg, and Sandwich in Ontario, and provinces including New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
